An 18 year old teenager from Columbus, Ga. won’t see the world outside of prison for the next five years. In addition to that, he will be on probation for the ten years after. All for a pair of Nike sneakers he stole when he was 15…

According to The Root, Dayonn Davis stole the sneakers from the original owner who was trying to sell them on Facebook. The Ledger-Enquirer reported that even though Davis has no prior criminal record, Judge Bobby Peters still sentenced him to five years.

The sneakers were a pair of Nike Oreos that typically go for more than $100.

According to prosecutor Davis had arranged to meet with the owner on January 17, 2016 after making contact on Facebook.

Davis brought another young man with him to the meet up. He asked to try the shoes on. After trying the shoes on he said “these shoes is took.”

Things escalated, his companion pulled out a pistol and everyone ran.

Columbus police tracked Davis down and found the shoes in his closet.

Davis initially would not name his companion. He named the individual but the victim couldn’t point him out in a photo lineup.

Davis told Peters he made an immature mistake: “I was young at the time, so I wasn’t in my right mind.”

“Maybe he’s the wrong person,” Peters said “He’s the one with the shoes in his closet.”
