Lucy McBath, the mother of a fatally shot teenager Jordan Davis, is also a gun control advocate, and the Democratic nominee in Georgia’s 6th congressional district. She beat out Kevin Abel for the spot. Now she will face Republican Rep. Karen Handel in November. McBath represents the growing number of female and minority candidates running for office in 2018, a shift especially important in states like Georgia.

Lucy McBath’s life changed in 2012, when her 17-year-old son was shot at a gas station in Florida, by a white man who said Davis and his friends were playing their music too loud. McBath became a political activist soon after, and will now run for congress, following a trend of women running in 2018.
